Homelab

Homelab

- Present

I have always been fascinated with computer and network hardware. After setting up an R Shiny server on a remote machine, I began toying with the idea of running web services at home.

A homelab means different things to different people, but in general it is a term used for the act or hobby of self-hosting services on a home or small network. Typically this is for personal use or educational purposes. I use it for both. I have cut my reliance on web hosting and cloud services, improved my ability to recover from data loss and learned a lot about associated technologies, networking and security in the process. It has also opened up many avenues to learn new things, like ESP32 microcontroller development and electrical component design. It all started when I wanted to learn to learn how to manage contanerized applications inside a Kubernetes cluster...

Associated Projects:

...

Home Assistant and Microcontrollers

2025

Home Assistant is an open source home automation service and dashboard for IoT device controls and sensor data. Paired with customized ESP32 IoT devices, I am able to control and monitor almost anything in my home remotely.

...

DIY Router

2025

One of the first Homelab projects I worked on was setting up my own router. This has given me a wide range of networking freedom and control that only the most expensive routers on the market can match.

...

Proxmox Hypervisor

2025

As a true hardware enthusiast, I have a reluctance to virtualize systems. However, Proxmox Virtual Environment has been a complete game changer for my homelab since I first ran it.

Local Large Language Models

2025

AI (Large Language Model[LLM) chatbots) are all the rage. However, data privacy, hallucinations, and response scope are all issues. To be able to experiment with LLMs and other models, I've added an Ollama server to my homelab.
